WHAT IS EXECUTIVE COACHING?
Senior executives are increasingly recognizing the benefits and opportunities of having an Executive Coach to enable them to gain better understanding and to become more aware of themselves and their environment. Through scheduled consultations a coach facilitates the performance, learning and development of the Executive, resulting in improved decision-making and long lasting change.
The impact of Executive Coaching is profound and far-reaching. Although ultimately concerned with performance, an independent coach empowers an Executive to find their own answers, encouraging and supporting them on a path as they continue to make effective choices. A coach works to get the best out of the Executive, believing that the person has the resources and capacity to achieve their goals. Through a process of reflecting ideas, evoking solutions and supporting their implementation, a coach helps an Executive to learn rather than teaching them.
Coaching is widely recognized for enhancing performance of individuals, productivity of teams and ultimately profitability of organisations. But coaching is not simply about helping to solve problems or achieve goals, although these will be achieved. It is primarily about a process of discovery, building awareness, taking responsibility and providing choices.
WHY HAVE AN EXECUTIVE COACH?
Businesses today are ever demanding on Executives. Flatter organisations, changing workplace dymanics, faster business cycles and 24/7 information flow have converged to increase the demands made on Executives and lessen the viability of traditional management development approaches.
To cope, people have to learn new ways of thinking and approaching situations in order to get better results. Traditional development programmes that have been directive in nature, such as training and instructing, have reduced the opportunity to think and be creative. They limit possibilities of taking responsibility and take the satisfaction out of the limited achievements that there might be.
In a coaching intervention, the approach is customized, the learning is intrinsic and satisfaction is derived from the pursuit and achievement of meaningful goals. The Executive defines their own goals, solves problems themselves and the responsibility stays with them. As a result, not only are extraordinary results achieved, but coaching also delivers fulfillment and meaning for the Executive. Improved performance is typically sustained for longer periods as the emphasis is on learning, developing and enhancing confidence.
